تَحَفَّظbe vigilant بِدينِكَabout your faith ياO ناسِكاًascetic
يَرىhe believes أَنَّهُthat he رابِحٌis gaining ماwhatever خَسِرhe loses
Guard your faith, O ascetic,
who sees gain in whatever he loses.
فَلَستَfor you are not كَغَيرِكَlike someone other than you أُطلِقتَyou were set free فيin
حَياتِكَyour life بَلrather أَنتَyou عانٍa captive أُسِرtaken prisoner
For you are not, like others, set free in
your life; rather, you are a captive taken prisoner.
وَلِلسِبكِand for recasting رُدَّwas returned كَسيرُbroken pieces of الزُجاجِglass
وَلاand not يُسبَكُis recast الدُرُّpearls إِنif يَنكَسِرthey break
And broken glass is returned for recasting,
but pearls cannot be recast if they break.
وَرِزقُكَand your sustenance يَأتيcomes بِلاwithout رَيبَةٍdoubt
فَسِرso travel فيthrough بِلادِكَyour lands أَوor لاdo not تَسِرtravel
And your sustenance comes without a doubt,
so travel through your lands, or do not travel.
وَلاand do not تَيأَسَنَّever despair مِنَof المُلكِsovereignty أَنthat
يَعودَit returns إِذاwhen جَيشُan army of قَومٍa people كُسِرwas broken
And never lose hope that sovereignty may
return when a people's army has been broken.
فَقَدfor indeed يَرجِعُreturns القَمَرَthe moon المُستَنيرُshining
مُقتَبِلاًrenewed بَعدَafter أَنthat يَستَسِرit disappears from view
For the shining moon returns
renewed, after vanishing from sight.
هُوَit is الدَهرُtime يَفنىpasses away وَنَفسيwhile my soul عَلىin
وَناهاits languor وَكَونُand the fulfillment of مُناهاits wishes عَسِرis difficult
Time passes away, while my soul remains in
its languor, and its wishes are hard to fulfill.
وَكَمand how many فيكَin you ياO بَحرُsea مِنof لُؤلوءٍpearls
وَلَكِنَّand yet لُجُّكَyour deep waters لاdo not يَنحَسِرrecede
And how many pearls there are in you, O sea,
yet your deep waters do not recede.
فَأَكرِهso compel عَلىto الخَيرِgoodness مَجبولَةًone naturally disposed
عَلىto غَيرِهِother than it فيin عِلانٍpublic وَسِرand secrecy
So compel to goodness a soul naturally disposed
to what is not good, in public and in secret.
فَلَمfor not يُجعَلِwas made التِبرُraw gold حَليَthe jewelry of الفَتاةِthe young woman
حَتّىuntil أُهينَit was humbled وَحَتّىand until كُسِرit was broken
For raw gold was not made into a young woman's jewelry
until it was humbled and until it was broken.
