قَضاءُ اللَهِ يَبتَعِثُ المَنايا

قَضاءُ اللَهِ يَبتَعِثُ المَنايا

فَيُهلِكنَ الأَساوِدَ وَالأُسودا

فَيُهلِكنَ الأَساوِدَ وَالأُسودا

God's decree sends forth deaths,

The decree of Allah unleashes calamities,

and they destroy black serpents and lions.

Destroying both the brave and the coward.

فَعيشا مُفضِلَينِ أَوِ اِستَميحا

فَعيشا مُفضِلَينِ أَوِ اِستَميحا

وَسودا مَعشَراً أَو لا تَسودا

وَسودا مَعشَراً أَو لا تَسودا

So live as benefactors, you two, or seek alms;

So live virtuously or seek forgiveness,

and rule a people, or do not rule.

And be either happy or cease to be so.

فَما بَهَجَ الصَديقَ الدَهرُ إِلّا

فَما بَهَجَ الصَديقَ الدَهرُ إِلّا

وَكَرَّ فَسَرَّ ذا الضَغنِ الحَسودا

وَكَرَّ فَسَرَّ ذا الضَغنِ الحَسودا

For Time never gladdened a friend without

For time gladdened not the sincere friend

turning back to delight the spiteful, envious one.

Except to later grieve the jealous foe.

يُسَيِّرُ بيضَهُ وَالسَودَ حَتّى

يُسَيِّرُ بيضَهُ وَالسَودَ حَتّى

يُبيدَ بِرَغمِها بيضاً وَسودا

يُبيدَ بِرَغمِها بيضاً وَسودا

It moves its white pieces and the black until

It moves the white and black pieces until

it destroys white and black, against their will.

It destroys despite itself both white and black.
