God is greatest! Never have I bought merchandise

without a slump overtaking its market.

A body lives without a coat of mail, and many a

body has lived out its years with no saffron upon it.

You are now thought to possess piety and wealth

and learning; so the envious have risen against you.

Yet you are empty of all three, as though

the hide enclosing you were an empty leather bag.

    رُزِقوا الَّذي حُرِمَ الكِرامُ وَسادوا

    The lords of kingdoms have kept good fortune occupied, away from you;

they received what the noble were denied, and became masters.

They slept while you did not, and attained what they sought,

and you failed to attain it; existence is flawed.

And among people is one who always seems

sick at heart, falling ill whenever he is ruled over.

Thoughts within them have died away, and dense have grown

their spirits, so that they seem like bodies.

Beds were spread for them, and beside them at night lay

pillows; you spent the night without a pillow.

Whoever is granted good fortune rejoices and gains

might, so that lions fear his sheep.

And were a desert gazelle to claim his patronage,

it would be spared its hunters' setting hounds upon it.
