صاحِO friend ماnot تَضحَكُlaugh البُروقُthe lightning flashes شَماتاًin gloating
بِحِمامٍover death وَلاand not تُبَكّيlament الرُعودُthe thunder
Friend, lightning does not laugh in gloating
over death, nor does thunder lament.
ياO مَحَلّيmy dwelling عَلَيكَupon you مِنّيfrom me سَلامٌpeace
سَوفَshall أَمضيI depart وَيُنجِزُand comes to pass المَوعودُwhat was promised
O my dwelling, peace upon you from me.
I shall depart, and what was promised will come to pass.
لَيتَwould that شَعريmy knowledge عَمَّنabout whoever يَحُلُّكَdwells in you بَعديafter me
أَقيامٌwill there be standing? لِصالِحٍfor good أَمor قَعودُsitting idle
Would that I knew who will dwell in you after me:
will they stand for good, or sit idle?
أَيُرَجَّونَare they given hope? أَنthat أَعودَI return إِلَيهِمto them
لاdo not تُرَجّواhold out hope فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I لاnot أَعودُI return
Are they given hope that I shall return to them?
Do not hold out hope, for I shall not return.
وَلِجِسميand for my body إِلىto التُرابِthe dust هُبوطٌa descent
وَلِرَوحيand for my soul إِلىto الهَواءِthe air صُعودُan ascent
And my body shall descend to dust,
and my soul shall ascend into the air.
وَعَلىand in حالِهاtheir condition تَدومُendure اللَياليthe nights
فَنَحوسٌthus ill fortune لِمَعشَرٍfor a people أَوor سَعودُgood fortune
And the nights endure as they are:
thus, ill fortune for a people, or good fortune.
