وَكَيفَand how ليfor me بِخَلاصٍwith an escape مِنهُمُfrom them دانِnear at hand
I dissemble with people; I have indeed been afflicted with them.
And how can I find escape from them close at hand?
مَنwhoever عاشَlives غَيرَwithout مُدّاجٍdissembling with مَنthose who يُعاشِرُهُassociate with him
أَساءَhas behaved badly in عِشرَةَcompanionship with أَصحابٍcompanions وَأَخدانِand intimates
Whoever lives without dissembling with those he associates with
Makes a poor companion to friends and intimates.
كَمmany a صاحِبٍfriend يَتَمَنّىwishes لَوthat نُعيتُI were announced dead لَهُto him
وَإِنyet if تَشَكَّيتُI complain راعانيhe tends me وَفَدّانيand declares himself my ransom
How many a friend wishes he were told of my death,
Yet if I complain, he tends me and offers himself as my ransom.
I have kept company with دَهريmy age وَسوءُand the foulness of الغَدرِtreachery شيمَتُهُits nature
فَإِنso if غَدَرتُI betray فَإِنَّthen indeed الدَهرَTime أَعدانيhas infected me
I have kept company with my age, whose nature is foul treachery;
So if I betray, Time has infected me.

And I care not, my sleeves being free
Of faults, if death should strike me down.

When I join my dust, from my grave will slip away
Praise and blame of me, from people in pairs or alone.

حِسّاًfeeling بِكَثرَةِin the multitude of زُوّارٍvisitors وَسُدّانِand custodians
Does the pilgrims' Kaaba take pride, though it lacks
Feeling, in its many visitors and custodians?
فيin الحَولِthe year عيدانِtwo feasts ماnot فازاthey both benefited بِماfrom what رُزِقاthey were both granted
فَيُظهِراso both might show البِشرَdelight لَمّاwhen قيلَit was said عيدانِtwo feasts
There are two feasts each year; they gain nothing from what they are granted,
And so show no delight when called 'two feasts.'
كَمhow often عَبَّدَenslaved الفَتَيانِthe two youths (night and day) الخَلقَmankind عَنat عُرُضٍrandom
بِذِلَةٍwith abasement وَهُماwhile they both لِلَّهِto God عَبدانِtwo slaves
How often the two youths—night and day—have enslaved mankind indiscriminately,
In abasement, though both are God's slaves.
أَمّاas for الجَديدانِthe two new things مِنof ثَوبيmy garment وَمِنand of جَسَديmy body

As for the two new things—my garment and my body—
Both wear out, but the ever-new pair—night and day—does not.
بُردُthe cloak of الشَبابِyouth وَبُردُand the cloak of الناسِجِthe weaver اِبتُذِلاboth were worn out

The cloak of youth and the weaver's cloak have both worn out;
And can two cloaks endure through the two cool times—morn and eve?
