The cure for what ails you has baffled me and you.
So hope in Him who brought me and you into being.

تُحصيcount خُطاكَyour steps فَهَلso can you تُحصيcount خَطاياكاyour sins
Why do I see you foolish, unable to
count your steps—can you then count your sins?
وَكَيفَand how تَعجِزُyou are unable عَنto إِدراكِovertake مُرتَحِلٍa departing traveler
وَاللَيلُwhile night وَالصُبحُand dawn كاناboth were مِنamong مَطاياكاyour mounts
And how can you fail to overtake a traveler
when night and dawn were among your mounts?
قَدindeed أَرذَياكَthey both exhausted you بِسَيرٍwith travel إِنif رَكِبتَهُماyou rode them both

They have exhausted you with travel, if you have ridden them,
yet this was never reckoned among your misfortunes.
أَذَهَبتَyou let slip away يَوماًa day فَلَمyet did not تَعدُدهُcount it مَرزِيَةًa misfortune

You let a day slip away, yet did not count it a misfortune,
while lost wealth was counted among your misfortunes.
وَالعُمرُand life أَنفَسُthe most precious ماthat which الإِنسانُa human being مُنفِقُهspends it

And life is the most precious thing a human being spends;
so devote it to God, and you will be praised for your character.
وَاِغفِرand forgive لِعَبدِكَfor your servant ماwhatever يَجنيهِhe commits it مِنof زَلَلٍmissteps
وَلاand do not تَأَيَّseek out بِسوءٍwith harm مِنwhoever تَأَيّاكاsought you out

And forgive your servant whatever missteps he commits,
and do not seek to harm anyone who has sought you out.

O king, not a single breath has been shared with you
by a companion who greeted you with 'May you spurn curses,'

nor by an old woman with a byname, nor a young beauty—
both among your captives in the dwellings.
سُقيتَyou were given drink فيin حَدَثانِthe early days of السِلمِpeace أَسقِيَةًwaterskins

You were given skinfuls to drink in the early days of peace;
and now you have forgotten the delight of your heady wine.

And as for you, by night calamities rise toward
your Suhā deliberately, and do not spare your Thurayyā.
