Were you a partridge among birds, you would be better guided in

your striving than peoples tracing their descent to Jacob.

They went astray through a calf fashioned from their earrings,

yet scorned an ear pierced for an earring.

    وَخِلتَ واعِدَهُم مِنَ الخُلفِ عُرقوبا

    And no Messiah will arise for whom they are gathered;

and you would deem their promiser an ʿUrqūb for his broken promises.

And this world of yours is indeed like an egg,

and its Lord will sever the chick from it.

A woven reed mat that shields you is enough for you,

instead of finely wrought carpets woven in Qurqūb.

So beware those thieving hopes, for they are robbers:

they have turned a man's heart from faith, leaving it pierced.
