Friend, lightning does not laugh with gloating joy

at death, nor does thunder lament.

O my dwelling, peace to you from me.

I shall depart, and what was promised will come to pass.

Would that I knew who will inhabit you after me:

will they rise to do good, or sit idle?

Do they hope that I shall return to them?

Do not hope, for I shall not return.

And my body shall descend into the dust,

and my soul shall ascend into the air.

And the nights endure just as they are,

bringing ill fortune to some, or good fortune.
