The young man meets you with pure, sweet water,

and in the depths of his soul a fire burns.

He gives you speech soft to the touch,

yet what he believes is like a sword’s edge.

And man revels out of ignorance,

while he is a captive in bonds and rawhide thongs.

How many a scheme the days have undone,

then unraveled every knot that was tied!

And man is like a seller in his market:

he takes what he is given and does not inspect it,

until, when the day has passed, he is distressed by

what his soul finds and what he misses.

I now bear no grudge against a companion,

even if a mine of goodness troubles me by harboring rancor.

For this world, as you see,

has neither paid blood money for one slain nor sought retaliation.
