إِنif كُنتَyou were قَدalready أوتيتَyou were granted لُبّاًreason وَُحِكمَةًand wisdom

If you have been granted reason and wisdom,
Then turn away from this world, for you are at odds with it.
وَكَونَنand be sure to be لَهاtoward it فيin كُلِّevery أَمرٍmatter مُخالِفاًopposed

And oppose it in every matter,
For there is no good for you in its sons, nor in it.

But far from it! You remain lovesick and infatuated
With a foolish woman who gives no sincere affection to her devoted lover.
فَإِنso if تَكُis هَذيthis الدارُabode مَنزِلَa lodging ظاعِنٍa departing traveler

So if this abode is a wayfarer's lodging,
Then soon I shall reach my permanent abode.
أُرَجّيI hope for أُموراًthings لَمnot يُقَدَّرhas been decreed بَلَوغَنُهاtheir attainment

I hope for things whose attainment has not been decreed,
And I fear calamities, though the Guardian suffices to avert them.
وَإِنَّand indeed صَريعَone slain by الخَيلِthe horsemen غَيرُnot مُرَوَّعٍterrified

And indeed, one slain by horsemen feels no terror
When scavenging birds make for the slain,

In a dusty waste that heeds neither drizzle nor downpour,
And amid a crosswind whose gusts scatter dust at evening.
أَرىI see مَرَضاًa sickness بِالنَفسِin the soul لَيسَis not بِزائِلٍpassing away
فَهَلthen will رَبُّهاits Lord مِمّاof what تُكابِدُit endures شافيهاheal it
I see a sickness in the soul that will not pass away;
Will its Lord, then, heal it of what it endures?
وَفيand in كُلِّevery قَلبٍheart غَدرَةٌtreachery مُستَكِنَّةٌlying hidden
فَلاso do not تُخدَعَنever be deceived مِنregarding خُلَّةٍa friendship بِتَوافيهاby its perfect accord
And in every heart lies hidden treachery;
So do not be deceived by a friendship's perfect accord.
