في رَبوَتَي عَودٍ كَظَهرِ الفالِجِ
Far from burning longing, they spent the night on the sands of ʿĀlij,
They spent the night at the sand dunes of Al-Aj
on the two rises of ʿAwd, like a two-humped camel’s back,
Between two rods like the hump of a camel

مِن بَعدِ طَيَّتِهِ وَسَلما دالِجِ
in a wilderness shunned by Madlaj’s Salmā,
In desolate darkness, Salma sighs heavily
because of its distant reaches—and by Dālij’s Salmā too.
After losing his cloak and in tangled robes

أَنِسوا ذَواتِ أَساوِرٍ وَدَمالِجِ
Like bracelets and armlets, amid hunger,
Like bracelets and necklaces in folds
they found companionship in bearers of bracelets and armlets.
Forget the owners of bracelets and necklaces

The earth had cast out the last remnant of its light,
The earth has shed the gleam of its light
so darkness deepened, save for a quivering gleam.
So darkness prevails but for lasting glow

They sought refuge in remembrance of the Sovereign; sufficient for them
They rushed to remember the King and He suffices
was the solace of that remembrance entering the heart.
As solace for them in the penetrating conscience
