Will you ever find yourself saying, with an intention
wholly sincere, to yourself: 'O obstinate one, desist!'

Your age has turned you from your piety with all its might;
so catch up before it is too late—catch up!
أَبراكَfitted you with a nose-ring رَبُّكَyour Lord فَوقَupon ظَهرِthe back of مَطيَّةٍa mount

Your Lord has fitted you with a nose-ring upon a mount's back,
a mount that traveled to reach the hour of being made to kneel.

Am I then to trust Time with a crop ripe for reaping,
upon which the signs of ripeness have appeared?

Your sin has sold you; yet the Guardian forgives
every error except associating partners with Him.

Why is your religion deficient in its equipment,
when a sandal is useless without a strap?

And the despoiler of rights stripped you bare; you did not rise
for justice until after long strife.

Death has buried you, O hearing, so you could not discern
the doves' cooing at Asjal and Arak.

I have become one of life's dwellers, yet I must
one day be still after long movement.

And birds go forth at dawn seeking their livelihood
on earth, though it is full of snares.
