لَقَدindeed جاءَناhas come to us هَذاthis الشِتاءُwinter وَتَحتَهُand beneath it
فَقيرٌa poor man مُعَرّىunclothed أَوor أَميرٌa prince مُدَوَّجُwrapped in a cloak
This winter has indeed come to us, and beneath it
is a naked pauper or a prince wrapped in a cloak.
وَقَدand sometimes يُرزَقُis granted المَجدودُthe fortunate man أَقواتَprovisions أُمَّةٍa people
وَيُحرَمُand is denied قوتاًsustenance واحِدٌone man وَهوَwhile he is أَحوَجُmore in need
The fortunate may be granted a whole people's sustenance,
while one man is denied food, though his need is greater.
وَلَوand if كانَتwere الدُنِّياthe world عَروساًa bride وَجَدتُهاI would find her
بِماbecause قَتَلَتshe has killed أَزواجَهاher husbands لاnot تُزَوَّجُto be married off
Were the world a bride, I would find her
unmarriageable, for having killed her husbands.
فَعُجso cup يَدَكَyour hand اليُمنىright لِتَشرَبَto drink طاهِراًpure
فَقَدfor indeed عِيَفَhas been disdained لِلشُربِfor drinking الإِناءُthe vessel المُعَوَّجُcrooked
So cup your right hand to drink what is pure;
for the crooked vessel is shunned for drinking.
عَلىon سَفَرٍa journey هَذاthis الأَنامُhumankind فَخَلِّناso let us
لِأَبعَدِfor the farthest بَينَparting واقِعٍthat will occur نَتَحَوَّجُwe seek provisions
This human race is on a journey; so let us
seek provisions for the farthest parting that must come.
وَلاand do not تَعجَبَنever marvel مَنone who سالَمَmakes peace إِنَّindeed سالِماًone who is safe
أَخوa companion of غَمرَةٍperil فيin زاخِرٍa swelling sea يَتَمَوَّجُthat surges
And do not marvel at one who makes peace; for even the unscathed
is beset by peril in a swelling, surging sea.
وَهَلand is هُوَhe إِلّاanything but رائِدٌa scout لِعَشيرَةٍfor a clan
يُلاحِظُhe watches بَرقاًlightning فيin الدُجىthe darkness يَتَبَوَّجُflashing
And is he anything but a scout for a clan,
watching lightning flare in the darkness?
وَلَولاand were it not for دِفاعُthe protection of اللَهِGod لاقىhe would have suffered مِنَsome of الأَذىharm
كَماas كانَhad لاقىsuffered خامِدٌan obscure man وَمُتَوَجُّand a crowned ruler
And without God's protection, he would have suffered harm
as the obscure and the crowned have suffered.
إِذاwhen وُقِيَis protected الإِنسانُa person لَمdoes not يَخشَfear حادِثاًa calamity
وَإِنand even if قيلَhe is called هَجّامٌa fierce attacker عَلىinto الحَربِwar أَهوَجُreckless
When a person is protected, he fears no calamity,
even if called a rash man who plunges into war.
وَإِنand if بَلَغَarrives المِقدارُthe allotted fate لَمdoes not يَنجُescape سابِحٌa swift steed
وَلَوand even if أَنَّهُthat it is فيin كُبَةِthe throng of الخَيلِthe horses أَعوَجُAʿwaj
And if the appointed fate arrives, no swift steed escapes,
even were it Aʿwaj amid the press of horses.
فَلاso do not تَشهِرنَever draw سَيفاًa sword لِتَطلُبَto seek دَولَةًdominion
فَأَفضَلُfor the best of ماwhat نِلتَyou have gained اليَسيرُa little المُرَوَّجُthat passes current
So do not draw a sword to seek dominion;
for your best gain is a little that passes current.
