نَقِمتَyou resented عَلىagainst الدُنياthe world وَلاand no ذَنبَoffense أَسلَفَتit had previously committed
إِلَيكَagainst you فَأَنتَso you are الظالِمُthe wrongdoer المُتَكَذِّبُthe liar
You resented the world, though she had committed no sin
You resented the world, though it had committed no offense
against you; for you are the unjust one, the teller of lies.
Against you; you are the wrongdoer, the liar.
وَهَبهاand suppose her فَتاةًa maiden هَلis ...? عَلَيهاupon her جِنايَةٌan offense
بِمَنagainst one who هُوَhe صَبٌّlovesick فيin هَواهاlove for her مُعَذَّبُtormented
Suppose her a maiden—does she bear any guilt
And suppose her a maiden: is she to blame
toward one who, lovesick for her, is tormented?
For one who is lovesick, tormented by his love for her?
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمواthey claimed هَذيthese النُفوسَthe souls بَواقِياًenduring
تَشَكَّلُtake shape فيin أَجسامِهاtheir bodies وَتَهَذَّبُand become refined
They claim that these souls endure,
And they have claimed that these souls endure,
taking shape in their bodies and growing refined,
Take shape within their bodies and become refined,
وَتُنقَلُand are transferred مِنهاfrom them فَالسَعيدُso the fortunate one مُكَرَّمٌhonored
بِماby what هُوَhe لاقٍis to meet وَالشَقِيُّand the wretched one مُشَذَّبُcut down
then passing out of them: the fortunate is honored
And are transferred from them; the fortunate is honored
by what awaits him, while the wretched is stripped bare.
By what he encounters, while the wretched is cut down.
وَماand not كُنتَyou were فيin أَيّامِthe days of عَيشِكَyour life مُنصَفاًtreated justly
وَلَكِنbut rather مُعَنّىtormented فيin حِبالِكَyour ropes تُجَذَّبُyou are tugged about
You were never fair in the days of your life,
And you were not treated justly in the days of your life,
but tormented, tugged to and fro in your own cords.
But were tormented, tugged about in your bonds.
وَلَوand if كانَwere to يَبقىremain الحِسُّsensation فيin شَخصٍa body مَيِّتٍdead
لَآلَيتُI would surely swear أَنَّthat المَوتَdeath فيin الفَمِthe mouth أَعذَبُsweeter
And if sensation remained in a dead body,
And if sensation were to remain in a dead body,
I would swear that death is sweeter in the mouth.
I would swear that death is sweeter in the mouth.
