A species has united you, and you have been debased

by your ancestry, while you flounder in darkness.

You have dug through rock and brought forth

water; why, then, do you not draw forth knowledge?

Some of you kill others, as though

you were rewarded for slaughtering healthy sheep.

You have guarded the frontier with your horses,

yet what you tether surpasses you in intellect.

You have been granted no good, nor have you been deprived

of evil; why, then, do you envy others?

An ignorant man thought you were rising,

while all of you descend a slope.

You have brought wealth under control, but what

runs away with a person you do not control.

You have acquired no glory, and have become

slaves to your genitals or bellies.
