مَنwhoever عاشَرَkeeps company with الناسَpeople لَمnot يُعدَمbe deprived of نِفاقَهُمُtheir hypocrisy
فَماfor … not يَفوهونَthey utter مِنany حَقٍّtruth بِتَصريحِwith frankness
Whoever keeps company with people will find no shortage of their hypocrisy;
for they utter no truth openly.
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِتَحريقِat the burning أَهلِthe people of الهِندِIndia مَيتَهُمُtheir dead
وَذاكَand that أَروَحُmore restful مِنthan طولِthe length of التَباريحِtorments
So marvel at the people of India burning their dead:
that is more restful than prolonged torments.
إِنif حَرَّقوهُthey burn him فَماthen … not يَخشَونَthey fear مِنany ضَبُعٍhyena
تَسريprowls by night إِليهِto him وَلاnor خَفيٍّgrave-robbing وَتَطريحِand casting aside
If they burn him, they fear no hyena
prowling to him by night, nor his being dug up and cast aside.
وَالنارُand fire أَطيَبُsweeter مِنthan كافورِthe camphor of مَيِّتِناour dead
غِبّاًin the long run وَأَذهَبُand better at dispelling لِلنَكراءِhideousness وَالريحِand stench
And fire is sweeter than the camphor used for our dead,
in the long run, and better at dispelling hideousness and stench.
