يَخونُكَ مَن أَدّى إِلَيكَ أَمانَةً

يَخونُكَ مَن أَدّى إِلَيكَ أَمانَةً

فَلَم تَرعَهُ يَوماً بِقَولٍ وَلا فِعلِ

فَلَم تَرعَهُ يَوماً بِقَولٍ وَلا فِعلِ

The one who discharged a trust to you will betray you

He who delivered a trust to you betrays you,

if you never show him care in word or deed.

and you never once cared for him in word or deed.

فَأَحسِن إِلى مَن شِئتَ في الأَرضِ أَو أَسِئ

فَأَحسِن إِلى مَن شِئتَ في الأَرضِ أَو أَسِئ

فَإِنَّكَ تُجزى حَذوَكَ النَعلَ بِالنَعلِ

فَإِنَّكَ تُجزى حَذوَكَ النَعلَ بِالنَعلِ

So do good to whomever you wish on earth—or do evil:

So do good to whomever you wish on earth—or do ill;

you will be repaid in kind, as one sandal matches the other.

for you are repaid in kind, as you match sandal to sandal.

يَرومونَ بِالسَعيِ المَراتِبَ وَالعُلا

يَرومونَ بِالسَعيِ المَراتِبَ وَالعُلا

وَرَبُّكَ يُهوي طالِبَ المَجدِ أَو يُعلي

وَرَبُّكَ يُهوي طالِبَ المَجدِ أَو يُعلي

They strive after high rank and lofty honors,

Through striving they seek rank and eminence,

yet your Lord casts the seeker of glory down—or raises him high.

and your Lord casts down the seeker of glory—or raises him high.
