لَقَدindeed جاءَناhas come to us هَذاthis الشِتاءُwinter وَتَحتَهُand beneath it
فَقيرٌa poor man مُعَرّىstripped bare أَوor أَميرٌan emir مُدَوَّجُwrapped in a quilt
This winter has indeed come to us, and beneath it is
a poor man stripped bare, or an emir wrapped in a quilt.
وَقَدand may يُرزَقُbe granted المَجدودُthe fortunate man أَقواتَprovisions أُمَّةٍa people
وَيُحرَمُand is denied قوتاًfood واحِدٌone person وَهوَand he is أَحوَجُmore in need
And the fortunate may be granted a whole people's sustenance,
while one man is denied food, though his need is greater.
وَلَوand if كانَتwere الدُنِّياthe world عَروساًa bride وَجَدتُهاI would find her
بِماbecause قَتَلَتshe killed أَزواجَهاher husbands لاnot تُزَوَّجُbe married off
And if the world were a bride, I would find her
not to be wed, for having killed her husbands.
فَعُجso bend يَدَكَyour hand اليُمنىthe right لِتَشرَبَto drink طاهِراًpure
فَقَدfor indeed عِيَفَhas been shunned لِلشُربِfor drinking الإِناءُthe vessel المُعَوَّجُcrooked
So cup your right hand to drink what is pure;
for the crooked vessel is shunned for drinking.
عَلىon سَفَرٍa journey هَذاthis الأَنامُhumankind فَخَلِّناso let us
لِأَبعَدِfor the farthest بَينَparting واقِعٍbound to occur نَتَحَوَّجُseek provisions
These mortals are on a journey; so let us
seek provisions for the farthest parting yet to come.
وَلاand do not تَعجَبَنmarvel مَنone who سالَمَmakes peace إِنَّindeed سالِماًa safe man
أَخوone caught in غَمرَةٍdeep water فيin زاخِرٍa swelling sea يَتَمَوَّجُsurges with waves
Do not marvel at one who makes peace, for a man unharmed
is caught in deep water, in a swelling, surging sea.
وَهَلand is هُوَhe إِلّاbut رائِدٌa scout لِعَشيرَةٍfor a clan
يُلاحِظُwatches بَرقاًlightning فيin الدُجىthe darkness يَتَبَوَّجُflashes
And is he anything but a scout for a clan,
watching lightning flash in the darkness?
وَلَولاand were it not for دِفاعُthe protection of اللَهِGod لاقىhe would have encountered مِنَsome of الأَذىthe harm
كَماas كانَhad لاقىencountered خامِدٌan obscure man وَمُتَوَجُّand a crowned ruler
And were it not for God's protection, he would have suffered harm,
as an obscure man and a crowned ruler had suffered.
إِذاwhen وُقِيَis protected الإِنسانُa person لَمnot يَخشَfear حادِثاًa calamity
وَإِنand even if قيلَit is said هَجّامٌa fierce attacker عَلىinto الحَربِwar أَهوَجُreckless
When a person is protected, he fears no calamity,
even if called a fierce, reckless assailant in war.
وَإِنand if بَلَغَarrives المِقدارُthe appointed fate لَمnot يَنجُescape سابِحٌa galloping steed
وَلَوand even if أَنَّهُthat it is فيamid كُبَةِthe throng الخَيلِof horses أَعوَجُAʿwaj
And if the appointed fate arrives, no galloping steed escapes,
even if it is Aʿwaj amid the throng of horses.
فَلاso do not تَشهِرنَbrandish سَيفاًa sword لِتَطلُبَto seek دَولَةًdominion
فَأَفضَلُfor the best ماwhat نِلتَyou gained اليَسيرُthe little المُرَوَّجُreadily circulating
So do not brandish a sword to seek dominion;
for the best you gain is a little wealth that circulates freely.
