كَفَتكَhave sufficed you حَوادِثُthe calamities الأَيّامِof the days قَتلاًkilling
فَلاso do not تَعرِضexpose yourself لِسَيفٍto a sword أَوor لِرُمحِto a spear
Time’s calamities are enough to kill you,
so do not expose yourself to sword or spear.
تَراضىhave mutually agreed أَهلُthe people دَهرِكَof your age بِالمَخازيto shameful deeds
فَكَيفَso how تُعيبُdo you fault رامِقَةًa woman who gazes بِلَمحِfor a glance
The people of your age have agreed to shameful deeds,
so how can you fault a woman merely for glancing?
وَأَصحابُand the companions of الشَريفِal-Sharif وَلاand no تَساوٍequality
كَأَصحابِlike the companions of اِبنِson of زَرعَةَZarʿah وَاِبنِand son of سَمحِSamḥ
And al-Sharif’s companions—though there is no equality—
are like the companions of Ibn Zarʿah and Ibn Samḥ.
