    عَنِ الخُبرِ يَحكي لا عَنِ السَلَفِ الحَبرُ

    Falsehood has flowed among them, elder after elder;

    the scholar speaks from experience, not from forebears.

    I have tested the children of this world, yet find myself drawn

    to them, as though experience of them had never cured me.

    An unjust nature that none has strength to combat,

    and an evil casting whose broken parts cannot be mended.

    Your recitation is neither for right judgment nor for guidance:

    it is for twenty, with neither assimilation nor vocal stress.

    لِمُقلَتِهِ مِمّا يُمارِسُهُ العَبرُ

    Life is nothing but the lessons of a traveler's journeys;

    his eye fills with tears from what he endures.

    I drained her last reserves through travel until I left her

    a spent riding camel, with no milk left in her teats.

    And after reckless arrogance, her ignorance died,

    and was buried—yet her skull is its grave.

    وَأَولى البَرايا بِالَّذي فُرِيَ الكُبرُ

    A report has reached us from a Yemeni and one bound for Syria;

    and the eldest of creatures has the best claim to what was fabricated.

    Fear God even over the bees' harvest when you taste it:

    for the bees gathered it for themselves alone.

    If you marry an old woman in your youth,

    her days for you will be Ṣinn and Ṣinnabr.

    And war's spears are shattered by needles; speech has bent

    toward them—how many a thrust slander provokes!

    وَإِلّا فَعَجزٌ مِن خَلائِقِكَ الصَبرُ

    Your patience is a virtue if you have the power to act;

    otherwise, that trait of patience is helplessness.

    Meeting you holds no good for one like me,

    nor for you; then see where a gift may be sought.
