غَدا الحَقُّ في دارٍ تَحَرَّزَ أَهلُها

غَدا الحَقُّ في دارٍ تَحَرَّزَ أَهلُها

وَطُفتُ بِهِم كَالسارِقِ المُتَلَصِّصِ

وَطُفتُ بِهِم كَالسارِقِ المُتَلَصِّصِ

Truth has come to dwell in a house whose people guard themselves,

and I went about them like a stealthy thief.

فَقالوا أَلا أَذهَب ما لِمِثلِكَ عِندَنا

فَقالوا أَلا أَذهَب ما لِمِثلِكَ عِندَنا

مُقيلٌ وَحاذِر مِن يَقينٍ مُفَصِّصِ

مُقيلٌ وَحاذِر مِن يَقينٍ مُفَصِّصِ

Then they said, “Be off! For one like you, we have no

resting place; beware a certainty that dissects.

أَلَم تَرَنا رُحنا مَعَ الطَيرِ بِالهُدى

أَلَم تَرَنا رُحنا مَعَ الطَيرِ بِالهُدى

وَأَنتَ طَريحٌ ذو جَناحٍ مُقَصَّصِ

وَأَنتَ طَريحٌ ذو جَناحٍ مُقَصَّصِ

Have you not seen us go forth with the birds, guided,

while you lie cast down, with a clipped wing?”

إِذا شُهِرَ الإِنسانُ بِالدينِ لَم تَكُن

إِذا شُهِرَ الإِنسانُ بِالدينِ لَم تَكُن

لَهُ رُتبَةُ المُستَأنِسِ المُتَخَصِّصِ

لَهُ رُتبَةُ المُستَأنِسِ المُتَخَصِّصِ

When a man is renowned for religion, he does not have

the standing of an intimate, specially favored companion.

فَطَبعُكَ سُلطانٌ لِعَقلِكَ غالِبٌ

فَطَبعُكَ سُلطانٌ لِعَقلِكَ غالِبٌ

تَداوَلُهُ أَهواؤُهُ بِالتَشَصُّصِ

تَداوَلُهُ أَهواؤُهُ بِالتَشَصُّصِ

For your nature is a sovereign that overpowers your reason;

its passions take turns plundering it.

سُقيتَ شَراباً لَم تُهَنَّأ بِبَردِهِ

سُقيتَ شَراباً لَم تُهَنَّأ بِبَردِهِ

فَعُنّيتَ مِن بَعدِ الصَدى بِالتَغَصُّصِ

فَعُنّيتَ مِن بَعدِ الصَدى بِالتَغَصُّصِ

You were given a drink, but no delight in its coolness;

so, after thirst, you were afflicted with choking.
