    Good fortune for me and for all the people of the earth

    is that my companions should never see me again.

    And hardship that overtook my face in its bloom

    is kinder to me than ease that brought me pallor.

    وَكَيفَ لي في مَراميهِنَّ باِلحابي

    My sin is great, and my arrows do not strike true;

    and how could I hope even for a ground-skimming shot at their targets?

    I was once unyielding, but reversals wore me down,

    until everyone could see my docility.

    So beware of people, the nearest and the farthest,

    even if they meet you with reverence and warm welcome.
