Exalted is the Provider of all the living.

Honor and modesty have indeed grown frail.

And death is indeed relief for a keen-minded man

Whose intellect an incurable illness has harmed.

Why should I not be my own executor,

And have no executors disobey my instructions?

And I have searched for people of faith

Who have devotion, but no ostentation.

So I found beasts, with no minds

    To establish proof for them, and no light;

And the brethren of keen wit, full of conceit,

As though they were prophets to a people.

    فَأَمّا الأَوَّلونَ فَأَغبِياءُ

    As for these, they are people of guile;

And as for the former, they are fools.

So if piety is foolishness and inarticulacy,

Then the abject asses are pious.

And better guided than you is a mangy ass beneath a load,

On which a northerly wind blows.

I found all people to be poor,

And no wealthy people are found among humankind.

We love life out of hatred for death,

And we are wretched because of what we have loved.

A man dies with no true friend,

And true friends were scarce even before today.

Does the sun know that she has splendor,

And so grieve that her radiance should leave her?
