Exalted are You, O Lord of the star! Is it aware

of its states at rising and setting?

Or are the shooting stars unaware, as guidance is unknown

to burning fuel beside a cave, stoked with laurel?

Nor did the sword of India know what the young man endured

with it in journeys by night and raids far afield.

And whoever loves the deceitful world is indeed

a captive in the two robes of humiliation and abasement.

When she gives generously, she brings loss; and when she withholds,

how many of the great and small she has filled with regret!
