كُلٌّeveryone عَلىto مَكروهِهِwhat he loathes مُسبَلُconsigned
كُلٌّ عَلى مَكروهِهِ مُسبَلُ
وَحازِمُand the prudent one الأَقوامِof the peoples لاnot يُنسِلُbegets offspring
وَحازِمُ الأَقوامِ لا يُنسِلُ
Everyone is consigned to what he loathes,
And the prudent among people beget no offspring.
فَسلٌbase أَبوthe father عالَمِناof our world آدَمٌAdam
فَسلٌ أَبو عالَمِنا آدَمٌ
وَنَحنُand we مِنthan والِدِناour father أَفسَلُbaser
وَنَحنُ مِن والِدِنا أَفسَلُ
Base is Adam, the father of our world,
And we are baser than our father.
لَوif تَعلَمُknew النَحلُthe bees بِمِشتارِهاof their honey-gatherer
لَو تَعلَمُ النَحلُ بِمِشتارِها
لَمwould not تَرَهاyou see them فيin جَبَلٍa mountain تَعسِلُmake honey
لَم تَرَها في جَبَلٍ تَعسِلُ
If the bees knew of their honey-gatherer,
You would not see them making honey on a mountain.
وَالخَيرُand goodness مَحبوبٌbeloved وَلَكِنَّهُbut it
وَالخَيرُ مَحبوبٌ وَلَكِنَّهُ
يَعجِزُis unable عَنهُto attain it الحَيُّthe living being أَوor يَكسَلُis lazy
يَعجِزُ عَنهُ الحَيُّ أَو يَكسَلُ
And goodness is beloved, yet
The living cannot attain it, or are too lazy.
وَالأَرضُand the earth لِلطوفانِfor the flood مُشتاقَةٌyearning
وَالأَرضُ لِلطوفانِ مُشتاقَةٌ
لَعَلَّهاperhaps she مِنof رَدَنٍfilth تُغسَلُis washed
لَعَلَّها مِن رَدَنٍ تُغسَلُ
And the earth longs for the flood,
Perhaps she may be washed clean of filth.
قَدindeed كَثُرَhas grown abundant الشَرُّevil عَلىupon ظَهرِهاher back
قَد كَثُرَ الشَرُّ عَلى ظَهرِها
وَاِتُّهِمَand has been accused المُرسِلُthe sender وَالمُرسَلُand the one sent
وَاِتُّهِمَ المُرسِلُ وَالمُرسَلُ
Evil has indeed grown abundant upon her back,
And the sender and the one sent have been accused.
وَأَمقَرَتand have turned bitter أَفعالُthe deeds سُكّانِهاof her inhabitants
وَأَمقَرَت أَفعالُ سُكّانِها
فَهُمso they ذِئابٌwolves فيin الفَضاthe open country عُسَّلُloping
فَهُم ذِئابٌ في الفَضا عُسَّلُ
And her inhabitants’ deeds have turned bitter;
So they are wolves loping through open country.
وَمَنand whoever يَكُنis يَومَon the day الوَغىof battle باسِلاًbrave
وَمَن يَكُن يَومَ الوَغى باسِلاً
فَالمَوتُthen death فيin حَملَتِهِits charge أَبسَلُbraver
فَالمَوتُ في حَملَتِهِ أَبسَلُ
And whoever is brave on the day of battle—
Death is braver still in its charge.
وَجَرعَهُand a draught (apparent misspelling) الذيفانِof deadly poison مَشروبَةٌis drunk
وَجَرعَهُ الذيفانِ مَشروبَةٌ
وَغَيرُهاand what is other than it المُستَعذَبُthe sweet-tasting السَلسَلُsmooth to swallow
وَغَيرُها المُستَعذَبُ السَلسَلُ
And a draught of deadly poison is drunk,
And other than it is the sweet, smooth drink.
فَأتِso do جَميلاًa good deed لَمhas not يَقَعoccurred بَأسُناour hardship (context unclear)
فَأتِ جَميلاً لَم يَقَع بَأسُنا
بِأَنَّهُbecause it يَوماًone day بِهِthrough it يوسَلُfavor is sought
بِأَنَّهُ يَوماً بِهِ يوسَلُ
So do a good deed; our hardship has not arisen [wording unclear],
Because one day favor may be sought through it.
