A man of fifty is clasped in ninety's knot,

which brings him a share of death.

    He complains of life's harshness,

and I think death harsher than life.

Let the man of piety and self-restraint beware

the words of an ignorant man who wins favor.

The goldsmith melts glass, but cannot

    melt pearls if they shatter.

The youth burns—and how often has Sirius blazed

    as fuel in blazing darkness!

How might I be upon a lofty mountain's summit,

and graze among wild beasts on myrtle and wild pomegranate?
