I do not know how life will end.
The tree of life bears death as its fruit.
تُغنيكَspare you ساعاتٌhours مُواشِكَةٌfast-approaching
عَمّاfrom what تَقولُsay البيضُthe white swords وَالسُمرُand the brown spears
Fast-approaching hours will spare you
what white swords and brown spears have to say.
وَالإِنسُand humankind تَهوىyou love قُربَهاtheir nearness أَنساًfor companionship
وَكَأَنَّهاand as though they were الآسادُthe lions وَالنُمرُand the leopards
And you love humankind's nearness for companionship,
yet they are like lions and leopards.

You have veiled your mind from discourse
with wine, which veils a mind like yours.

فَسُرورِيَbut my joy التَلويحُemaciation وَالضُمرُand leanness
Whoever delights in the corpulence he lives with—
my joy is emaciation and leanness.
لَيلٌnight يَجُنُّcloses in وَفيand in حَنادِسِهِits pitch-black depths
قَمَرٌa moon تَجاوَلَwheeled about تَحتَهُbeneath it قُمرُwhite steeds
Night closes in, and in its pitch-black depths
is a moon beneath which white steeds wheel.

And black ranks amid the dust clouds are driven back
by green-backed blades whose breasts are red.

وَاللَهُand God يُفصَلُis decided عِندَهُbefore Him الأَمرُthe matter
And people wander lost, without a signpost,
while the matter is decided in God's presence.
وَتَكَشَّفُand clear away الغَمراتُoverwhelming perils عَنfrom رَجُلٍa man
وَهوَwhile he is الجَهولُutterly ignorant بِشَأنِهِof his own condition الغُمرُa novice
And overwhelming perils clear away from a man,
though he is ignorant of his own condition, a novice.
آلَيتُI swore ماnot فيin جيلِناour generation أَحَدٌanyone
يُختارُis chosen لاnot زَيدٌZayd وَلاnor عَمروAmr
I swear: no one in our generation
is worth choosing—not Zayd, nor Amr.
عُمناwe swam عَلىabove دُرٍّpearls فَأَعوزَناbut they eluded us
إِنَّindeed الجَواهِرَthe jewels دونَهاbefore them الغَمرُdeep water
We swam above pearls, yet they eluded us;
indeed, deep water bars the way to jewels.
وَأَرىand I see المَعاشِرَpeople فيin غَرائِزِهِمtheir innate natures

سوءُbadness الطِباعِof character الخَتلُdeceit وَالقَمرُand gambling
And I see in people's inborn natures
ill character, deceit, and gambling.
نارٌfire فَمَيتُهُمُso their dead الرَمادُash هَباhas blown away
وَكَأَنَّماand as though أَحياؤُهُمtheir living جَمرُembers
They are fire: their dead are ashes blown away,
and their living seem to be embers.
وَتَشوقُنيand stirs my longing فيin الجِنحِthe dusk زامِرَةٌa piping bird
ماnot دينُهاher way لَعِبٌplay وَلاnor زَمرُpipe-playing
And in the dusk a piping bird stirs my longing;
her way is neither play nor music.

Where are those whose words were always
rain from rainless clouds, their bounty a downpour?

If they overwhelm you with gifts and largesse
from them, no rancor lies within their breasts.
لَيسَthere is not اِمرُؤٌa man فيin العَصرِthis age أَعلَمُهُI know him
إِلّاexcept وَباطِنُand the hidden part أَمرِهِof his affairs إِمرُa monstrous thing
There is no man I know in this age
whose inward state is not appalling.
أَمّاas for اللَئيمُthe base man فَعِندَهُthen he has حُلَلٌfine robes
وَغَداand has become الكَريمُthe noble man وَثَوبُهُand his garment طِمرُa tattered rag
As for the base man, he has fine robes,
while the noble man now wears a tattered garment.
طَمَرَleapt الجَهولُthe ignorant man إِلىto مَراتِبِهِhis ranks
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنىhe turned back وَحِباؤُهُand his reward طَمرُburial
The ignorant man leapt up to his high stations,
then turned back, with burial for his reward.
