The Pleiades are no cluster of white Mulahi grapes,

nor is the night a ripe black grape.

    ريبِ فَلِيَتَّقِ المَليكَ اللَبيبُ

    And sunset's glow is far removed from wine;

so let the discerning man fear the Sovereign.

Long is the night, as though the Scorpion had been slain

by an assailant, and so its creeping had ceased.

Along the high road, in death's caravan, went

    Qatari, Najda, and Shabib.

The prudent man's thought has kindled a fire; never

does love verse befit a man of reason.

Where are Hippocrates and his follower Galen?

How vain to think a physician could live on!

Sustenance is made available to all creatures; never

is that provision cut off by incapacity.

And death runs its course by decree; neither

    lion nor hand-reared gazelle escapes.

The loathed visitor appears, while life

    is dear to these souls.

The hardships of calamities incited them against it,

but that incitement glanced off their hearts.
