وَماand not جادَتgave generously لَناto us بِقَليلِeven a little رِسلِmilk
These full-uddered beasts now graze at ease,
Yet they have not yielded us even a little milk.
لَقَدindeed دَرِنَتhas become soiled بِيَby me الدُنِّياthe world زَماناًfor a long time
وَسَوفَand will يُجيدُperform skillfully عَنهاoff it المَوتُdeath غَسليwashing me
The world has long been soiled by me,
And death will skillfully wash me off it.
وَكَمand how many شاهَدتُI have witnessed مِنof عَجَبٍa wonder وَخَطبٍand a calamity
وَمَرُّand the passage الدَهرِof time بِالإِنسانِover a person يُسليbrings consolation
And how many wonders and calamities I have witnessed—
And time's passing over a person brings consolation—
تَغَيُّرُthe change دَولَةٍof a dynasty وَظُهورُand the rise أُخرىof another
وَنَسخُand the abrogation شَرائِعٍof religious laws وَقِيامُand the arising رُسلِof messengers
The change of one dynasty and the rise of another,
And the abrogation of religious laws and the rise of messengers.
وَضَبٌّand a spiny-tailed lizard ماnot رَأىhas seen فيin العَيشِlife خَيراًany good
وَماand not يَنفَكُّceases مِنfrom تَربيتِrearing حِسلِa young lizard
And a spiny-tailed lizard has seen no good in life,
Yet it never ceases rearing its young.
لَوَif اِنَّthat بَنِيَّmy sons أَفضَلَّthe finest أَهلِpeople of عَصريmy age
لَماwould not آثَرتُI preferred أَنto أُحظىbe favored بِنَسلِwith offspring
Even if my sons were the finest people of my age,
I would not choose to be favored with offspring.
فَكَيفَso how وَقَدand indeed عَلِمتُI have learned بِأَنَّof the fact that مِثليone like me
خَسيسٌbase لاnot يَجيءُbegets بِغَيرِanything but فَسلِa worthless one
How then, when I know that one like me
Is base and begets nothing but a worthless child?
