I told you the truth صاحِبيmy friend لاno مالَmoney عِنديin my possession
وَقَدand indeed كَثُرَhave grown numerous الضَيافِنُthe guests' hangers-on وَالضُيوفُand the guests
I have told you the truth, my friend: I have no money.
And hangers-on and guests have grown numerous.
أُناسٌpeople فيin أَكُفِّهِمtheir palms عِصِيٌّsticks
وَقَومٌand folk فيin أَكُفِّهِمtheir palms سُيوفُswords
People with sticks in their hands,
And folk with swords in their hands.
دَراهِمُهُمtheir dirhams نَقِيّاتٌpure وَلَكِنand yet
نُفوسُهُمُtheir souls إِذاwhen كُشِفَتare laid bare زُيوفُcounterfeit
Their dirhams are pure, but
Their souls, when laid bare, are counterfeit.
وَماand there is no فيon الأَرضِthe earth مِنany شِربٍdraught كَريمٍfine
يُسَرُّis delighted بِوَردِهِupon coming to drink from it الصاديthe thirsty man العَيوفُthe fastidious one
And nowhere on earth is there a fine draught
That delights the thirsty, fastidious man when he comes to drink.
