    The belly of the earth has spared me the evil of its surface,

    and made plain the equality of slave and king.

    I have lived a long life, yet throughout it have never known

    a sense that perceives a jinn or an angel.

    And dominion belongs to God; its great ones are not lost,

    nor its lesser ones, whether living or dead.

    وَإِن نَأَت عَنهُ روحٌ فَهِيَ بِالفَلَكِ

    If a body dies, this earth stores it;

    and if a soul departs from it, it is in the celestial sphere.

    Even if I became Sulayk, fate would come to me—

    whether a companion of night travel or a little partridge chick.
