A three-day fever in the burning heat of illness
is better for your soul than three cups.
لاdo not تَشرَبَنَّever drink الخَمرَwine فَهِيَfor she is غَويَّةٌwayward

Never drink wine, for she is wayward;
she has driven her herds through prolonged misery.
عَجَباًhow strange! لَناfor us وَلِمَنand for those who مَضىpassed away أَقدامُناour feet

How strange we and those departed are! Our feet
walk over their bodies and heads.

And those who come after us will surely do the same to us.
Indeed, Death's arrows are in the bows.
راسَruled الفَتىthe young man زَمَناًfor a time وَراسَand ruled حِمامُهُhis death
فَغَداso became الرَئيسُthe ruler كَأَنَّهُas though he لَمdid not يَرأَسِrule
The young man ruled for a time, and his death ruled;
so the ruler was as though he had never ruled.
