وَجَدتُI found سَجاياinborn traits الفَضلِvirtue فيamong الناسِpeople غُربَةًalien
وَأَعدَمَand has impoverished هَذاthis الدَهرُage مُغتَرِبيهِits exiles
I found the traits of virtue alien among people,
and this age has impoverished its exiles.
وَإِنَّand indeed الفَتىthe young man فيماin what أَرىI see بِزَمانِهِto his times
لَأَشبَهُsurely more like مِنهُthan he is شَيمَةًin character بِأَبيهِto his father
And indeed, a young man, as I see it, resembles his times
more in character than he resembles his father.
وَوالِدُناand our father هَذاthis التُرابُdust وَلَمand has not يَزَلceased
أَبَرَّmore generous يَداًof hand مِنthan كُلِّall مُنتَسَبيهِits descendants
And our father is this dust, which has always been
more generous of hand than all its descendants.
يُؤَدّيdelivers إِلىto مَنthose who فَوقَهُare above it رِزقَthe sustenance رَبِّهِof its Lord
أَميناًfaithfully وَيُعطيand gives الصَونَprotection مُحتَجِبيهِthose hidden within it
It delivers its Lord’s sustenance to those above it,
faithfully, and grants protection to those hidden within it.
وَلاand no شَيءَthing مِثلُlike الخَيرِgoodness يُزمَعُis resolved upon تَركُهُabandoning it
وَيُصبِحُand becomes مَبذولاًfreely offered لِمُكتَسِبيهِto those who earn it
And nothing is like goodness: people resolve to forsake it,
yet it is freely offered to those who would earn it.
وَيُقسَمُand is apportioned حَظُّthe share النَفسِof the soul شَرقاًeastward وَمَغرِباًand westward
عَلىaccording to قَدَرٍdestiny مِنamong خامِلٍan obscure person وَنَبيهِand an eminent one
And the soul’s share is apportioned, east and west,
by destiny, among the obscure and the eminent.
تَشابَهَتِresemble one another الأَشياءُthings طَبعاًin nature وَصورَةًand in form
وَرَبُّكَand your Lord لَمhas not يُسمَعbeen heard لَهُfor Him بِشَبيهِof an equal
Things resemble one another in nature and form,
yet none like your Lord has ever been heard of.
