Indeed, I have experienced the workings of the ever-new pair, day and night:

    two opposing kinds—blessings and misery.

Time's vicissitudes never cease coming each morning

upon humankind, with cloaking and deception.

They swept away Khosrow and did not spare his marzbans,

and destroyed the Mundhirs and the Qabuses.

They visited Husayn and struck Hasan down with death,

and faced the house of Abbas with a scowl:

the spear-thrusters, while the riders' rain pours down,

    when running carries away the bodies of weaklings;

horsemen who, when they loose their horses' reins,

do not cling to the saddle pommels out of fear.
