وَلَيسَ في كَفِّهِ مِن دينِهِ طَرَفُ
He has failed who journeys away from his worldly life,
And has no portion of his faith in his hand.

There is no good for a man but the good of the hereafter
That preserves him; such is glory and honor.

We hope for safety in the hereafter, yet not good enough
Are our deeds to warrant hope of salvation and lofty chambers.

No people departed this first life with what they gathered
Of worldly chaff, but with what they had committed.

I asked my reason; it gave no answer, and I said to it:
"Ask the men"; they gave no ruling and did not know.

They spoke, then swerved; but when I urged them
To logical reasoning, they revealed their inability and confessed.

Two neighbors—a king and a needy man; a time came
Upon them both, and misery and luxury became equal.

If you ride horses or forge their saddles
From gold, you still return to the dusty earth.
وَالفَقرُand poverty أَحمَدُmore praiseworthy مِنthan مالٍwealth تُبَذِّرُهُyou squander it

إِنَّ اِفتِقارَكَ مَأمونٌ بِهِ السَرَفُ
And poverty is more praiseworthy than wealth you squander.
Indeed, your poverty is a sure safeguard against extravagance.

The poor man goes naked, and a dinar would clothe him,
While in your clothes chest lie things it is folly to store.
