وَطُفتُand I went around بِهِمamong them كَالسارِقِlike a thief المُتَلَصِّصِstealthy
Truth came to dwell in a house whose people were on their guard,
and I went about among them like a stealthy thief.

They said, 'Be off! Here, for one like you, there is no
resting place; beware of a shattering certainty.

When a man is renowned for religion, he does not have
the rank of a privileged intimate.
فَطَبعُكَfor your nature سُلطانٌa sovereign لِعَقلِكَover your reason غالِبٌoverpowering

For your nature is a sovereign that overpowers your reason;
its passions take turns tugging it about.
سُقيتَyou were given to drink شَراباًa drink لَمnot تُهَنَّأyou were gladdened بِبَردِهِby its coolness

You were given a drink whose coolness brought you no delight,
so, after thirst, you were afflicted with choking.
