    Abīdah whispered to the ibexes:

You shall perish by God’s decree; then I shall perish.

Nor do I claim invulnerability for the two Farqad stars,

nor for Naʿsh’s family of stars, as Labīd did.

And many a wrongdoer relishes honey, as though he were

a male ostrich whose wilderness fare is colocynth seed.

And many a dun sandgrouse has perished, leaving a rock pool behind,

and many a wild she-ass, her grazing grounds now empty of her.

For ʿAbīd and Ibn Hind and Tubbaʿ

and Kisrā’s family are slaves to the Sovereign.
