Before today, the soul had always been at ease,

until, by God's decree, it settled in the body.

Now, from grit and harm, that soul and this body

give you no respite—let alone from rancor and envy.

The base man said to wealth, through which he had gained eminence:

“I shall surely honor you; without you, I would not have gained eminence.”
