Lo, the gazelles are surely deluded,

Hoping to live forever after Tarj’s lions have perished.

And the noblest in rank of those you see on earth

Lives all his life a slave to mouth and loins.

And souls’ love of this world is a delusion

That has kept people in turmoil and confusion.

And indeed, might in a spear and shield

Is more apparent than it is in pen and scroll.

Nor would I choose to be the king, with wealth collected

For me from tolls and tribute.

So leave your two companions, Arab and non-Arab,

For your two allies, camel’s pack-saddle and horse’s saddle.

    وَإِلّا فَالكَواكِبُ خَيرُ سُرجِ

    Your lamp in darkness is a predator’s eye;

Otherwise, the stars are the best of lamps.

Whenever you uncover the characters of humankind,

You find all the injustice and sin you could wish.

Grudges have endured since before Noah,

Over paltry flocks of sheep and herds of camels.

They provoked Abel’s murder by his brother,

    And set Muʿtazilite against Murjiʾite.

And betrayed Luqman’s love for Luqaym,

On nights when they altered acacias at Sharj.

So be tactful to make a living, and bear the harm

Of your companions, narrow-eyed and large-eyed.

For lions are followed by wolves

    And ravens—some one-eyed, others lame.

Your journey through the lands is less fraught with loss

With the two bands—the pale and the pied.

And how many a lion, a mighty lord, has been deceived

Among kings, by a woman with jewels and a jewel-box!
