Welcome to death's calamity and its return,

that it may cover me with the trailing folds of its garments.

Your world is a dwelling: if those present in it are

wise, they do not weep for those absent from it.

She has revealed calamities exceeding the pebbles

in number—and how many lie in her bosom and her bags!

She rends them with her swords and casts them down

with her spears, and strikes them with her downpours.

Those who win her glory and her wealth are

only close in circumstance to those she disappoints.

A venom-gathering serpent's fangs are the mouth of her

who incited excess, so I fancied wine in her fangs.

    فَالعَجزُ وَالتَفريطُ في هُيّابِها

    Indeed, death has never feared one who fears her;

so helplessness and negligence lie in those who dread her.

And among the wonders is that everyone longs

for Umm Dafr, Mother of Stench, though he is among her detractors.

So spit eloquence away from the dust, for it

rules for her death-announcer against her Ziryab.
