أَتَفرَحُdo you rejoice? بِالسَريرِin the throne عَميدَO lord of مُلكٍa kingdom
بِجَهلِكَthrough your ignorance وَالحُصولِand attaining عَلىto السَريرَةthe hidden intention
Do you rejoice in the throne, O lord of a kingdom,
Do you rejoice as the chief of a kingdom's rule,
in your ignorance, and in attaining your secret wish?
In your ignorance, obtaining the throne?
وَلَوand if قَرَّرتَyou fixed فِكرَكَyour thought فيon المَناياdeaths
إِذاًthen لَبَكَيتَyou would indeed weep بِالعَينِwith the eye القَريرَهthe contented
And if you fixed your thought upon deaths,
If you were to ponder your end in death,
then you would weep with your contented eye.
You would weep with flowing tears.
أَكُلُّis it every عَشِيَّةٍevening جَسَدٌa body جَريرٌdragged
إِلىto جَدَثٍa grave لِيُسأَلَto be questioned عَنabout جَريرَهan offense
Is a body dragged every evening
Each evening a helpless body
to a grave, to be questioned about an offense?
Goes to a grave to be questioned of its sins.
وَماand not رَقَّتshowed tenderness وَلاnor رَثَتِfelt pity اللَياليthe nights
مِنَfrom السَرحانِthe wolf لِلأَظبيfor the gazelles الغَريرَهthe guileless
And the nights have shown neither tenderness nor pity
Neither have the nights been gentle or merciful
for the guileless gazelles against the wolf.
To the doe-eyed gazelle.
فَهَلso has أَوصَتinstructed بَنيهاher sons أُمُّthe mother of خِشفٍa fawn
بِأَنthat لاnot تَظلِمواyou wrong أَحداًanyone بَريرَهan arak berry
So has a fawn's mother instructed her young
Did the mother of Khashaf advise her children
not to deprive anyone of even an arak berry?
To not wrong anyone, even an ant?
تُوَدِّعُناbids us farewell الحَياةُlife بِمُرِّwith the bitterness of كَأسٍa cup
إِذاwhen اِنتَفَضَتcame undone مِنَfrom الحَيِّthe living being المَريرَهthe tightly twisted cord
Life bids us farewell with a bitter cup,
Life bids us farewell with a cup of bitter drink,
when the twisted cord comes loose from the living.
When the bitter soul departs.
نَأىdeparted عَنهُfrom him النَسيسُthe last remnant of life فَقَدso indeed تَساوىhas become equal
لَهُfor him لَمسُthe touch of الحَديدَةِthe piece of iron وَالحَريرَهand the silk cloth
The last remnant of life has left him; now alike
The unworthy avoid him, so he is equal
to him are the touch of iron and the touch of silk.
To the touch of iron and silk.
