Do not rejoice at a good omen if you hear of it,

nor read an ill omen when a crow caws.

For calamity is more dreadful than the good fortune you hope for,

yet the matter is too easy for you to harbor dread.

If you ponder a thought untainted

by corruption of sound reason, what was hard becomes easy.

For the intellect, if sound, grants the soul its respite

until it dies, and calls its earnestness play.

And the beauties out in their playgrounds in the morning

are but a moment's phantoms, resembling dolls.

The body's added bulk has wearied the body of the one who carries it

to the dust, and increased a digger's toil.
