    فَالناشِئاتُ إِذا طالَ المَدى عُجُزُ

    Do not pass the evening grieving over one who has died;

    for young women become old women when the span of time grows long.

    إِنَّ القَصائِدَ لَم يُلحَق بِها الرَجَزُ

    You have fallen short of attaining the heights of honor;

    indeed, rajaz verse has not been placed on a par with the odes.

    As for the Hijaz, there is no hope of dwelling there,

    because it is hemmed in by the five lava fields.

    يَشبُهُ القَومُ شُدَّت مِنهُمُ الحُجُزُ

    And in al-Sham, the fuel of war is ablaze;

    it seems the people's waistbands have been drawn tight.

    And in Iraq, a flash of lightning rains down blood,

    and a thunderer chants rajaz upon meeting evil.

    وَالصَدرُ يَأتي عَلى مِقدارِهِ العَجُزُ

    And time's end is found to be like its beginning;

    and a verse's second half follows the measure of its first.

    So make me ready—may God curse you, mother—

    it falls to me to follow my companions and be done.
