أَسَرَّكَdid it delight you? أَنthat كانَتthere was بِوَجهِكَupon your face وَجنَةٌa cheek
سَمِيَّةُa namesake of عيرٍan ass تَحمِلُcarries المِسكَthe musk وَالعِطراand the perfume
Did it delight you that upon your face there was a cheek,
The namesake of an ass, bearing musk and perfume?
وَماand did not عَلِمَknow الأَغراضَthe aims خاطِرُone venturing into حِندِسٍdeep darkness
يُعِدُّprepares لَهُfor him غاوٍan erring man يُعانِدُهُopposes him الخِطراthe stake
And one venturing into deep darkness knew not the aims;
An erring man who opposes him prepares the stake for him.
فَلاso neither القَطرُthe palace آواهُsheltered him وَلاnor القُطُرُthe caravans ضَمَّهُtook him in
وَلاnor هُوَhe مِمَّنamong those who يَسحَبُtrails الوَشِيِّthe brocade وَالقِطراand the striped cloaks
So neither a palace sheltered him nor the caravans took him in,
Nor is he among those who trail brocade and striped cloaks.
أَعيشُI live بِإِفطارٍby breaking the fast وَصَومٍand fasting وَيَقظَةٍand wakefulness
وَنَومٍand sleep فَلاso neither صَوماًfasting حَمِدتُI praised وَلاnor فِطراbreaking the fast
I live by breaking the fast and fasting, by wakefulness
And sleep; yet I have praised neither fasting nor breaking the fast.
