خَيرٌbetter لِآدَمَfor Adam وَالخَلقِand the people الَّذيwho خَرَجواthey came forth
مِنfrom ظَهرِهhis loins أَنthat يَكونواthey should be قَبلُbeforehand ماnot خُلِقواthey were created
It would have been better for Adam and the people who sprang
From his loins never to have been created in the first place.
فَهَلso, did ...? أَحَسَّfeel وَبالِwhile the decayed part of جِسمِهِhis body رِمَمٌcrumbling remains
بِماof what رَآهُsaw it بَنوهُhis sons مِنof أَذىًharm وَلَقواand they suffered
So did he feel—his body now crumbling remains—
The harm his sons had seen and suffered?
وَماand what تُريدُdo you want بِدارٍwith a dwelling لَستَyou are not مالِكَهاits owner
تُقيمُyou stay فيهاin it قَليلاًbriefly ثُمَّthen تَنطَلِقُyou depart
And what do you want with a dwelling you do not own,
Where you stay briefly, then depart?
فارَقتَهاyou left it غَيرَnot مَحمودٍpraised عَلىin سَخَطٍdiscontent
وَفيwhile in ضَميرِكَyour heart مِنof وَجدٍlonging بِهاfor it عَلقُa clinging remnant
You left it unpraised, in discontent,
While in your heart some longing for it still clings.
تَبَوَّأَtook up residence الشَخصُthe person مِنin غَبراءَdusty earth مُظلِمَةٍdark
قَرارَةًa resting place بَعدَماafter أَزرىbrought low بِهِhim القَلَقُrestlessness
The man found, in dark and dusty earth,
A resting place, after unrest had brought him low.
تَكونُyou are لِلروحِfor the soul ثَوباًa garment ثُمَّthen يَخلَعُهُit casts it off
وَالثَوبُand the garment يَنهَجُwears out حَتّىeven الدَرعُarmor وَالحَلَقُand mail-rings
You are a garment for the soul, which then casts it off;
And the garment wears out—even armor and mail-rings.
وَأَخلَقَتهُand wore it out اللَياليthe nights فيin تَجَدُّدِهاtheir renewal
وَالغَدرُand treachery مِنهُنَّfrom them فيin أَخلاقِهِwearing it out خُلُقُa habit
The nights have worn it out as they renew themselves;
And treachery is their habit in wearing it out.
وَالناسُand people شُتّىare diverse فَيُعطىso is given المَقتَhatred صادِقُهُمtheir truthful one
عَنِabout الأُمورِaffairs وَيُحّبىand is rewarded الكاذِبُthe liar المَلِقِthe flatterer
And people differ: their truth-teller is hated
For his account of affairs, while the lying flatterer is rewarded.
يَغدوsets out إِلىtoward المَينِfalsehood مَنwhoever قَلَّتare few دَراهِمُهhis dirhams
فَيَجمَعُand so he amasses المالَwealth ماas long as يَفريhe fabricates lies وَيَختَلِقُand he invents falsehoods
He whose dirhams are few turns to lying,
And amasses wealth as long as he fabricates and invents.
وَرُبَّماand sometimes عَذَلَreproaches الإِنسانُa person مُهجَتَهُhis own soul
فيfor الصُدقِtruthfulness حينَwhen يَرىhe sees جَدَّthe good fortune of الَّذيthe one who يَلقُlies
And sometimes a man reproaches his own soul
For truthfulness, when he sees the liar's good fortune.
وَيُخلِفُand disappoints الظَنُّexpectation فيabout الأَشياءِthings صاحِبَهُits holder
وَالغَيمُand the cloud يَكديwithholds rain وَداعيwhile the herald of البَرقِlightning يَأتَلِقُgleams
And expectations about things disappoint their holder;
And clouds yield no rain, though beckoning lightning flashes.
