المَوتُdeath رَبعُan abode of فَناءٍextinction لَمdid not يَضَعset down قَدَماًa foot
فيهِin it اِمرُؤٌa man فَثَناهاthen turned it back نَحوَtoward ماwhat تَرَكاhe left behind
Death is an abode of extinction: no man has set a foot
within it and then turned it back toward what he left behind.
وَالمُلكُand dominion لِلَّهِto God مَنwhoever يَظفَرsucceeds بِنَيلِin obtaining غِنىًwealth
يَردُدهُreturns it قَسراًby force وَتَضمَنand guarantees نَفسُهُhis soul الدَرَكاthe liability
And dominion belongs to God; whoever succeeds in gaining wealth
must return it against his will, and his soul stands surety for it.
لَوif كانَwere ليfor me أَوor لِغَيريfor someone other than me قَدرُthe measure of أُنمُلَةٍa fingertip
فَوقَabove التُرابِthe dust لَكانَthen would be الأَمرُdominion مُشتَرَكاshared
If I or another owned so much as a fingertip's breadth
above the dust, dominion would be shared.
وَلَوand if صَفاbecame clear العَقلُreason أَلقىcast off الثِقلَthe burden حامِلُهits bearer
عَنهُaway from him وَلَمand did not تَرَyou see فيin الهَيجاءِthe fray مُعتَرِكاa combatant
And were reason clear, the bearer would cast the burden
off himself, and you would see no combatant in the fray.

Indeed, the hide that its owner cast away
satisfies the tribe when they divide it as partners.
دَعِleave alone القَطاةَthe sandgrouse فَإِنfor if تُقدَرis destined لِفيكَfor your mouth تَبِتit spends the night

Leave the sandgrouse alone: if destined for your mouth, it will spend the night
journeying toward it, though you have set no snare for it.
وَلِلمَناياand toward deaths سَعىstrove الساعونَthose who strive مُذsince خُلِقواthey were created
فَلاso do not تُباليyou care أَنَصَّwhether it hurried الرَكبُthe caravan أَمor أَركاit lingered
And toward their deaths the strivers have striven since they were created;
so do not care whether the caravan hurried or lingered.
وَالحَتفُand death أَيسَرُeasier وَالأَرواحُand souls ناظِرَةٌawaiting
طَلاقَهاtheir divorce مِنfrom حَليلٍa husband طالَماfor so long فُرِكاwas detested
And death is easier, and souls await
their divorce from a husband long detested.
وَالشَخصُand the person مِثلُlike نَجيبٍa noble camel رامَsought عَنبَرَةًa lump of ambergris

And a person is like a noble camel that sought a lump of ambergris
from Death; when it sniffed it, it sank to its knees.
