Exalted are You, Lord of the star! Is it aware

of its own states at rising and setting?

Or are the shooting stars unaware, as guidance is unknown

to a fire beside a cave, stoked with laurel wood?

Nor did the sword of India know what the young man endured

with it, in night journeys and raids far afield.

And whoever loves the deceitful world is surely

a captive in the two robes of abasement and humiliation.

When it gives generously, it brings loss; and when it withholds,

how many, great and small, has it left grieving!
