عَلَيهِaround him وَيحَكَalas for you لاdo not تَظهَرemerge وَمُتand die كَمَداof grief
The mother's womb called to the child she had enfolded
within her: “Alas for you! Do not emerge; die of grief.
فَإِنfor if خَرَجتَyou emerge إِلىinto الدُنياthe world لَقيتَyou will meet أَذىًharm
مِنَfrom الحَوادِثِmisfortunes بَلحَnot to mention القَيظَsummer's heat وَالجَمَداand ice
For if you come into the world, you will meet harm
from misfortunes, not to mention summer's heat and ice.
وَماand not تَخَلَّصُyou escape يَوماًa day مِنfrom مَكارِهِهاits hardships
وَأَنتَand you لاno بُدَّescape فيهاin it بالِغٌreaching أَمَداan appointed end
Never a day will you escape its hardships,
and in it you must reach your appointed end.
وَرُبَّand many a مِثلَكَone like you وافاهاcame to it عَلىat صِغَرٍa young age
حَتّىuntil أَسَنَّhe grew old فَلَمand did not يَحمَدpraise وَلاnor حَمِداwas praised
Many a one like you came to it in infancy,
and lived till old age, neither praising nor praised.
لاnot تَأمَنِis safe الكَفُّthe hand مِنfrom أَيّامِهاits days شَلَلاًparalysis
وَلاnor النَواظِرُthe eyes كَفّاًblindness عَنِّthat befalls أَوor رَمَداeye inflammation
The hand is not safe from the paralysis the world's days bring,
nor the eyes from blindness that strikes, or inflammation.
فَإِنbut if أَبيتَyou refuse قَبولَaccepting النُصحِthe counsel مُعتَدِياًtransgressing
فَاِصنَعthen do جَميلاًgood وَراعِand heed الواحِدَthe One الصَمَداthe Self-Sufficient
But if, defiant, you refuse to accept this counsel,
then do good, and heed the One, the Self-Sufficient.
فَسَوفَfor you will تَلقىfind بِهاin it الآمالَhopes واسِعَةًvast
إِذاwhenever أَجَزتَyou pass beyond مَداًa stretch مِنهاof them رَأَيتَyou see مَدىanother stretch
For there you will find hopes stretching far:
whenever you pass one stretch of them, you see another.
وَتَركَبُand you sail اللُجَّthe deep sea تَبغيseeking أَنto تُفيدَacquire غِناًwealth
وَتَقطَعُand you traverse الأَرضَthe earth لاnot تُلفيyou find بِهاin it ثَمَداa little water
You sail the deep, seeking to acquire wealth,
and cross the earth, finding not even a little water.
وَإِنand if سَعِدَتyou prosper فَماthen not تَنفَكُّyou cease فيin تَعَبٍtoil
وَإِنand if شَقيتَyou are wretched فَمَنthen who لِلجِسمِfor the body لَوif هَمَداit falls still
And if you prosper, you are never free of toil;
and if you are wretched, who will tend the body should it fall still?
ثُمَّthen المَناياdeaths فَإِمّاthen either أَنthat يُقالُit is said مَضىhe passed away
ذَميمَblameworthy فِعلٍin deed وَإِمّاor else كَوكَبٌa star خَمَداwent out
Then comes death: either they say, ‘He passed away
blameworthy in deed,’ or, ‘A star has gone out.’
وَالمَرءُand a person نَصلُthe blade حُسامٍof a keen sword وَالحَياةُand life لَهُfor him
سَلٌّunsheathing وَأَصوَنُand more protective لِلهِندِيِّfor the Indian blade أَنthat غُمِداit be sheathed
A person is a keen sword's blade, and life for him
is its unsheathing; an Indian blade is safer sheathed.”
فَلَوand if تَكَلَّمَspoke ذاكَthat الطِفلُchild قالَhe would say لَهُto it
إِلَيكَaway with you عَنّيfrom me فَماfor not أُنشِئتُI was brought into being مُعتَمِداby my own choice
Had that child spoken, he would have said to it:
“Leave me alone! I was not brought into being by my own choice.
فَكَيفَhow then أَحمِلُcan I bear عَتباًblame إِنif جَرىbefalls قَدَرٌa decree of fate
عَلَيَّupon me أَدرَكَovertook ذاone with جِدٍّearnestness وَمَنand whoever سَمَداwas heedless
How, then, can I bear blame if a decree falls
upon me, overtaking the earnest and the heedless alike?”
