أَعَزَّthe dearest شَيءٍthing وَلاand not يُعطيكَit gives you تَعويضاrecompense
أَعَزَّ شَيءٍ وَلا يُعطيكَ تَعويضا
Some men are like a dead man's grave: you give it
What you hold most dear, yet it gives you no recompense.
وَالسَمحُand the generous man فيin العُدمِpoverty مِثلُlike الصَخرِrock فيin دَيمٍsteady rains

يَخضَرُّ شَيئاً وَلا يَسطيعُ تَرويضا
And the generous man in poverty is like rock in steady rains:
It turns a little green, but cannot become a meadow.

Dismantle your tents in this world, for it holds
People who have made departure a duty for the noble.

And take for yourself, from a lifetime you squander,
A portion, and never surrender all control over your affairs.

A date palm on some land has favored you, feeding you ripe fruit;
So make a watering basin for it, in preference to the people's palms.
