They have prepared for one to be buried, whose hour of death has come,

a house of wood, neither raised high nor spacious.

O you there, leave him with the soil, for he has

comfort in it, and it is the most fitting companion one could have.

And the body is only dust; its best state is

to be watered by clouds, so ask the clouds to rain upon it.

The cheerful one among people has become a line of windblown dust,

yet he could be alarmed if his face grew pale.

Alike are one who feels no distress shortly after death

and one measuring clouds in the dwellings of young men.

So fear laughter, and beware of making it your ally.

Do you not see how the cloud, when made to laugh, breaks into sobs?
